Once again, PNE had a championship campaign that promised so much but, as usual,
reverted to the norm and ended in a damp squib. No Play-offs, no relegation, but an
interesting season that had its ups and downs. Support for the manager from the fans was
sweet and sour, as whenever we got close to success, PNE decided to remove their socks
and shoes and shoot themselves in the foot. And so for another year we managed to avoid
any success whatsoever.
We seem to have been here before, haven't we, but this year was even more frustrating
than normal, with our exciting team of promotion prospects topping the table at Christmas
before collapsing into a bunch of hopeless misfits and finishing the season with a
miserable string of five defeats. Just how this remarkable and alarming transformation was
accomplished is, of course, the subject of lively and erudite debate in other places, so we
will leave it to them to draw their wise conclusions.
So onto more important matters.........
The renowned PP competition welcomed a new champion as Mark (WorcesterWhite) took
the PP crown in only his second season after a creditable 6th place finish in his first
campaign. Congratulations to Mark on his victory, in the end by a comfortable margin.
Mark started off the campaign quietly before going on a stunning run in October to put him
on top of the table before a slight blip in January left him in 3rd place. Not to worry, a
repeat of his exploits from October in February put him back on top, and from then on, he
never looked back on his way to the title. So Mark becomes the 15th different name to be
engraved on the PP trophy, and a very worthy winner indeed.
The top 6 were completed in order by Barb (Snow White), Glen (Glenpne), Keith
(Sagwhite), Mike (Pneireland), and Martin (Pne_Junior) who achieved his first top six
finish. Gary (costablanca white) won his second cup competition to add to his PP Trophy
collection and move up to third in the all-time leaderboard.
Congratulations to the above, and thanks to everyone else who played and kept going until
almost the end of the season. We would like to see you all back in August for what will be
our twentieth season of Preston Predictions, to witness yet again PNE's rise to the play-offs
at the end of March before slipping unfathomably but inexorably into midtable oblivion.
Happy summer to you all!
